Fourteen-year-old Max, leader of a flock of genetically engineered part-human/part-bird hybrids, must volunteer, along with the five youngest members of the group, to join the Navy in learning why fish are dying off the coast of Hawaii, in order to be able to rescue her mother who has been kidnapped by a criminal mastermind.
