In 1871, Ned, an upper-class young Connecticut man who recently did a stint as a buffalo skinner out West gets accused of setting off a bomb at a labor rally with a dance hall girl and a fourteen-year-old coal miner and flees with them across the country, becoming witnesses of a nation in transition.
