Thorfinn, a prince raised by his power-hungry father and wealth-obsessed mother, is sent out at age eighteen to make an advantageous marriage, accompanied by the wise court jester and an old tabby cat, and reaches the kingdom of the Golden Mountains where he is faced with an interesting choice between three princesses.
