British diplomat Nicky Fleming's wife and three children leave Germany in 1980 following his death, and return to their home in Scotland's Outer Hebrides, where they become distant from each other while trying to deal with their grief and suspicions that Fleming may have been a spy, leaving young Jamie, an imaginative child, to become convinced that a tamed grizzly bear, living among the seaside caves, has some connection to his father.
