A class field trip to Camp Go Green inspires Hope Roberts to take up environmental causes, but getting busy grown-ups (or her older sister) to pay attention to a middle schooler can be something of a problem, and so is Hope's expectation that everyone will share her enthusiasm; her science club gets her school to add more recycling bins, start a carpooling program and create a garden, but it turns out that saving the world is more complicated than she realized.

Following their mother's death in the Covid-19 pandemic, twelve-year-old twins Nicky and Josie move with their father to an isolated island in Alaska, where Nicky embraces her new life, learning about the forests from her cousin, but Josie seems determined to turn herself into a radical environmentalist, with little consideration for the people on the island and the economic woes the pandemic has caused.
