Upon moving to her aunt's seaside home in the British Isles, Connie becomes part of a secret society that shelters mythical creatures, and must use her ability to communicate with these beings to protect them from evil and the incursions of humans.

Thirteen-year-old Connie Lionheart, the only person able to communicate with the world's unseen mythical creatures, becomes alarmed when she starts to feel the pull of a dark power, and unable to convince the secret society that protects the bonds between humans and creatures that she is under attack, she retreats to an underground world in search of answers.

Mallins Wood is home to the last surviving gorgon, and Col's mother, the gorgon's supernatural Companion, is determined to save it from encroaching development--even to the point of endangering Col and his best friend Connie, the most powerful Companion alive.

Connie and Col band together to save the world for all creatures--including the mythical ones of which few humans are aware--from the shape-shifter Kullervo's army and, along the way, Connie finds herself transformed in an amazing way.
