Fifteen-year-old Linden, the youngest faery of the Oak, teams with a human named Timothy to search other places for faeries who might be persuaded to save the Oakenfolk from dying out.

While staying on her uncle's rundown farm in the Somerset countryside, twelve-year-old Midge discovers that she has a special connection to the Various, a tribe of "strange, wild--and sometimes deadly" fairies struggling to maintain their existence in the nearby woods.

In Somerset, England, on her family's farm, Midge must find a lost artifact that will help the warring tribes of the Various--little people that only Midge can see--return to their homeland, but in order to accomplish this, she must first find her great-great-aunt Celandine, who also spent time with the Various as a child.

While staying with distant relatives in England, Americans Rowan, Meg, Silly, and James Morgan, with their neighbors Dickie Rhys and Finn Fachan, learn that one of them must fight to the death in the Midsummer War required by the local fairies.

After the Midsummer War ends, Meg Morgan faces a madman in the battle for control of the last bastion of fairies in England, aided by her siblings Rowan, Silly, and James, and American neighbors Dickie Rhys and Finn Fachan.
