Eight-year-old Olivia "Liv" Livingston loves her town Pleasant Place, but when her family moves to spooky Gloomsdale, she must learn to adjust to this ghost town where its residents are all from various decades and centuries, the hall monitors are bats, and some students have fangs.

Now that she is better settled into her new life at Gloomsdale, eight-year-old Liv Livingston feels like she has adjusted to this town of ghosts and supernatural beings, so she soon has the confidence to try out for the Ghoul Squad, the school's cheerleading team.

Liv meets Mrs. Arber, the ghost caring for the Gloomsdale Botanical Gardens who has come to help Liv's class with their class project, which asks that the students find a plant that best represents them, but Liv has trouble knowing the answer.
